Do you feel more secure using your credit or debit card in a real store instead of an online retailer? Your fears may be misplaced. Shopping online or with cash might be proving to be safer than the alternatives due to recent trends.

Retailers And wireless network hacking

There has been a recent rise of wireless network hacking. Criminals intercept the wireless signals to get your personal data. These wireless fidelity networks are vulnerable to hacking. The global information technology expert Aviva Litan (also the VP of Gartner, Inc) released findings in June 2007 demonstrate the increasing trend of wireless network hacking.

However, online retailers expect hackers and take security measures to encode your information. wireless network hacking is planned for, and experts in computer safety are hired to thwart the attempts and build stronger protections. The stores know that in order to stay afloat, they need to protect their customers from harm.

Brick and mortar stores, however, face difficulties with their POS (point of sale) machines that you use to swipe your card. Many, particularly at gas stations, now use wifi technology to transmit your information. Litan estimated that only about 30% of these card readers are actually safe from data breaches. Quite a bit of your personal information is stored in that magnetic stripe, and that is the information that people are looking for when they resort to wireless network hacking.

Real World wireless network hacking

Computer networks are becoming more utilized in modern society. A customer’s data becomes vulnerable to wireless network hacking as it races around cyberspace. The low cost and convenience of wireless internet make it attractive to retail operations. The information is sent in a similar fashion to radio waves, and anyone with the proper knowledge and equipment can “listen in” to the signals. This is attributed to the rise in wireless network hacking.

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is a system that encrypts personal data so that it would not be legible to anyone attempting wireless network hacking. Many companies use this system to try and protect their customers’ personal and banking information from criminals.

However, Litan thinks that WEP is too easy to decode for the hackers. It does not provide as much security as would be expected against wireless network hacking. Businesses need to take stronger steps to protect their customers and employees from wireless network hacking.

Protecting Yourself From wireless network hacking

Litan advises that consumers use cash when they need to make real world purchases until gas stations and other businesses find ways to provide enhanced security. Make sure to follow standard online safety tips, such as keeping your usernames and passwords secret and never sending personal information via email or instant messenger. The information that is most at risk includes items such as bank account number, driver’s license information, number Social Security number. Take care to always protect yourself from wireless network hacking.

How To Choose The Right wireless network antenna

More and more people are finding that a wireless network in the home is very advantageous, especially if you work from home. However, this requires finding the right wireless network antenna. Some people believe that when choosing an wireless network antenna that size is everything, that the bigger the antenna the better the connectivity. It is worth analyzing and understanding your needs before you start spending money on wireless network antenna. There are two main types to consider, the directional and the omni directional antennas. These are broad categories of wireless network antenna, within these there are further types and yet more decisions to be made.

Why Choose Directional wireless network antenna.

As the name implies this wireless network antenna will emit a signal in only one direction. Since the signal from a directional wireless network antenna is only pointing in one direction the signal is often stronger than the multi directional ones as these are dispersed and hence the strength reduced.

If you are looking to install a direction wireless network antenna in your home, then you will probably need to have two entirely individual wireless points.

What Are The Advantages Of Installing Omni Directional wireless network antenna

If it is a large access range you are looking for in your wireless network antenna, then the omni directional will probably be best for you as it distributes its signal through a full three hundred and sixty degrees, i.e. in all directions from its standpoint. So long as you are within the distance range from the antenna point you should get a reception.

Once you have decided which wireless network antenna will best suit your needs you will then have to choose the type of antenna. If you are looking at the directional antennas then there are the following types: dish type, panel, backfires or yagis antennas. Equally if you have decided on omni directional antenna installation you will be choosing between mobile vertical, ceiling, and desktop antennas.

Of course there are plenty of companies who will be more than happy to advise and install your wireless network antenna. At least with this knowledge you will hopefully understand what they are suggesting and will be able to see if their suggestions will actually offer what you want. As wireless networks get more and more popular the antenna will probably reduce in costs as well.

Basics Of wireless internet for laptops

It used to be that wireless internet technology was expensive and unreliable, not to mention the security problems. With little range, it was impractical to use in larger buildings. Amplifiers could be set up, but often that did not work properly. Setting up multiple access points caused problems for the equipment. Financially, only corporations could afford to install wireless networking. The equipment was far too expensive for the average consumer. Equipment had to constantly be purchased, and it was difficult to keep the networks running properly. Few who experienced these early stages thought that wireless internet for laptops would become the huge commodity that it is now.

Laptops were not practical from the start either. When they were first created, they were known as portable desktop computers. Almost as large as suitcases and quite heavy, there was no way that these machines would ever fit on your lap. While they were portable in name, if they were bumped the entire hard drive could be erased. It was important to park the hard drive whenever the computer was going to be moved, which refers to securing it internally so as to prevent the shaking and bumping that today’s laptops can handle. No one had yet imagined wireless internet for laptops.

However, technology continued to advance at a rapid pace. Hard drives became smaller and more durable, while the storage space increased exponentially. It wasn’t long before a gigabyte of information would fit on a device roughly the size of a credit card. With technology so fast, small, and stable, laptop sales now rival desktop sales for the home consumer. Businesses regularly issue employees their own laptops for work purchases as well. Prices have dropped on laptops to the point where they are almost equal to a desktop with the same features. The portability of the new generation of laptops has allowed people to work and communicate anywhere, and increased the demand for affordable, effective wireless internet for laptops.

It was only a matter of time before companies began to capitalize on the need for wireless internet for laptops. Public wi-fi (or wireless fidelity) connections began to appear in many public places, such as coffee shops and libraries. There was no need to sit at home and work when you could do it from a favorite coffee shop or restaurant. wireless internet for laptops has helped an entire generation of people become portable, in their lives and jobs. More information can be exchanged from more locations. Every day, the world gets smaller thanks to the advancements of technology.

Like every technology, wireless internet for laptops had growing pains. The charges for using public wi-fi hotspots were excessive and there were security issues that made it easy for hackers. However, as technology grows these problems are being eliminated. In no time, wireless internet for laptops has become the standard for communication.

A Bright Future for Wireless Internet Connectivity
For the consumer and the wireless internet connectivity technology, the honeymoon is definitely over. It is truer in the high technology industry than any other commercial industry, where any new product that is smaller, shinier, and more powerful will bring the buyers to the check out. Although WiFi technology has been available as early as 1991, the widespread availability of the technology to an average person has not occurred until just about the last decade. The nearly free cost of wireless internet connectivity has contributed to its recent quick growth, making it nearly impossible for internet providers and product engineers to keep up with the pace.

The Importance of Internet Security
Security issues have been a major hurdle for wireless internet connectivity. Because wireless internet connectivity works much like radio waves, any person with the right ‘radio’ can intercept these transmissions. This has generated a new form of computer hacking often called “sniffing”. When conducting sniffing, online criminals can eavesdrop and use data they discover which can include credit card information and bank account data. All of these activities are considered a serious form of fraud.

A new industry has emerged to protect consumers from these fraudulent criminals. Technology intended to apply security measures to software is a growing field. The wireless internet connectivity security functions have included the use of encryption techniques and double ID certifications. Because of the limited range of WiFi, a sniffer generally has to be located in the same area and using the same network if they are attempting to pick up your transmission.

Self-Regulation
The wireless internet connectivity industry has been self-regulating for the most part since its introduction in to the general consumer market. Currently, it will remain this way. Industry leaders and decision makers have adequately cooperated with governments when they have needed to. Alternatively, the individual need of clients has also been considered and managed well. In some ways, consumers can be more difficult for industry specialists to satisfy than government regulators. Users have very little tolerance for functionality and security issues with wireless internet connectivity.
The governments of Japan, America, and the European Union do have regulation measures on WiFi antennas- Equivalent Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRPs, also known as dBm or mW). This regulation is partially due to the small amounts of radiation used with the antennas that can be a health hazard. This has required the antennas to be placed where the impact would be minimized for exposure.

There are clearly some areas of wireless internet connectivity that needs to be resolved. The security of the technology is one of the highest concerns along with the consistency of the signals. The regulation of the wireless internet connectivity is also a hot topic that will likely continue to service as new WiFi technology is developed. As wireless internet connectivity continues to improve, consumers will continue to buy the latest and greatest technology available.

The Facts About Wireless Internet Cameras

Technology is advancing and moving on all the time, supposedly making our lives easier. The advance of wireless internet cameras has certainly added something to our lives, and so far it seems to be without too many complications. If you are concerned about a part of your property and want to keep an eye on it, or an office or lab which you are concerned about, then wireless internet cameras are just what you are looking for.

Wireless internet cameras are extremely simple to use, you simply choose where you would like to see and place the camera accordingly. As the name suggests there are no wires and nothing to set or calibrate. So long as you are in range of the camera signal, you can view the scene on your computer. If you want to check the view of the camera from different locations this is not a problem. The image from the camera can be viewed through a standard internet browser. The software supplied with the camera also allows a type of slip screen system, allowing you to view the output from several cameras at once. This is a level of control previously only available to large organizations at a large cost. The advance of the technology for wireless internet cameras has potential to change the way we think, to take more responsibility for our wellbeing, especially in an age when we are living closer and closer together but without the security of the community.

Wireless Internet Cameras Video Capabilities
Since wireless internet cameras can be on all the time, but you will not necessarily want to sit watching their output, they are supplied with software which will record the cameras output and allow you to catch up with it when you have the time. This facility of wireless internet cameras would have been hard to utilize until recently when the price of hard drive suddenly dropped. This reduction in price meant that storage space was no longer a problem.

The wireless internet cameras are now appealing for more than just a security aspect. If you were to need to travel and wanted to make sure that you didn’t miss your kids birthday party, you could watch it on the camera and then you could even create photographs from the footage. Travelling no longer means missing out on important events. To view the output of a camera you will need to set the computer IP address to be the unique identity for that camera, so you will not be broadcasting your family life for others to be able to tap into.

Remember, however versatile the wireless internet cameras are, people have rights and you do not want to infringe these, if you are considering using them in a work place you will need to advise all those who may be affected by them of their presence and purpose.

It seems that technology is changing every day, and it can be difficult to keep up with all the jargon and acronyms that are being created. It may seem easier to just stick with the technology that has worked for you in the past and ignore new innovations. However, wireless networking is not a technology to fear. This technology is build to last, so it is a wise investment to set up your home or business with a wireless network.
The wireless computer network is easy to create, even for a technological newbie. WiFi, as wireless networking is often referred to, can take less time to set up and learn than you spent learning to ride a bike.

What Is The wireless computer network?

Two more acronyms you will encounter are WLAN or LAN, which refer to a wireless local area network. A good analogy for this is a local radio station — antennas and electromagnetic waves are used to transmit and receive information instead of traditional cables. If you set up the right devices you can intercept the signals and build a wireless computer network. Many cable and phone companies offer wireless services, so you may want to start with your current provider and see if they have a deal.

Requirements For A wireless computer network

When you buy new phones, laptops, PDAs, and personal computers, they will already include a built-in wireless adapter. However, if you own older models of any of these items you may need to purchase a WiFi adapter to allow your machine to connect to the service. Besides a computer, you will need a WiFi provider, a wireless internet card, and a hotspot.

Hotspots are locations where you can receive a strong WiFi signal. As with the radio analogy, there are some locations that may have “static” because of interference. You may need to physically move to find a location where the signal is strongest. Hotspots are often found in public areas such as airports, libraries, and coffee shops. While many WiFi signals can be picked up in wireless computer networks, care must be taken to avoid interference from buildings or large trees. If you are purchasing a wireless networking plan for your business, take care to consider the locations of your doors and walls.

wireless computer network Security

When you are setting up your wireless computer network, take safety precautions to protect your information. These signals may be difficult to hack, but they are not foolproof. Use passwords and encryption so no one on the network can “listen in” to your activity. Also, consider installing a firewall on your system.

Common internet safety precautions can help protect your wireless computer network. Make sure to install and regularly run a virus protection software and security system. Keep your passwords and usernames private to help avoid problems. Your wireless computer network system will be a valuable asset, so take the time to learn all its benefits and protect it.

So Why Have We Suddenly Got wifi hot spots Everywhere?

There can be no questions about the fact that the internet has changed our lives. Wifi internet hotpots are going to be the next big thing. Wireless internet is apparently going to change the way we think, the way we work and of course the way we live our lives. wifi hot spots are areas where you can simply open up your laptop and access your emails, or your office. These wifi hot spots are usually placed strategically in airports and in cafes, places where people will naturally be sitting and waiting, reading or working. Wifi hotspots can vary in size; some will simply cover the area of a café, while others are almost big enough to cover small towns.

How Do wifi hot spots Work?
Firstly you need an access point, commonly called an AP. This connects the various devices together to form a network. This wireless access point is called a WAP. Each WAP needs an IP address. This is configured to the network.

Depending on the design, some wireless access points can be connected to each other and can therefore for a bigger area for the user to be able to access. The user may need a password to access the different parts of the wireless internet hotspots or they may be configured so that it all appears the same to the used.

If you want to connect at a wifi hot spots you will need to understand the payment systems. It is up to the owners of wireless internet hotspots as to whether they leave them open and allow all and sundry to access the internet through their network. The main disadvantage of this is that as people discover that there is free access it network will get slower as the band width is divided amongst the users. This reduced band width will slower down any uploading and downloading the use may wish to perform. The majority of networks are not free and access will be charged and entrance to the network will not be permitted until a payment has been made.

How Secure Are wifi hot spots?
Security on the internet is very hard at the best of times. Security is more about reducing the risk than actually being able to remove the risks! Depending on whom your wireless internet supplier is they may offer software to improve the security while out and about with your laptop. This will usually be supplied free, but it is always worth checking before you hit the download button.

It is worth remembering that wifi hot spots are created for convenience and often to generate custom for another business, they are not their to service your office and they do not really care about the level of security.

There are many companies vying for your business when it comes to getting online. Many of the top names in telecommunications are now offering wired and wireless internet service. One of the biggest names right now is Verizon wireless internet access. Their connection is simple to install in your own home.

Installing Verizon Wireless Internet Access

There is no need to spend your day waiting for a Verizon technician to arrive and install your internet connection. The company has designed it so that you can install your Verizon wireless internet access on your own. It will take about an hour and you do not need extensive computer experience to complete the process. Verizon provides simple instructions for anyone to follow.

However, if you do prefer to have help with installation, that option is still available. Verizon wireless internet access can be installed by one of their trained employees instead.

Check Your Email

To sign up for Verizon wireless internet access, you can either call the company or visiting their website. Verizon’s heavy advertising makes it simple to locate their phone number to set up an account. It is best if you already have some internet access available if you want to hook up the service yourself. Much information will be sent to your email address, including the date that your welcome package was mailed and a tracking number.

When the package arrives, you are ready to set up your Verizon wireless internet access. Make sure to retain the full contents of your package until you have successfully installed the connection. If you cannot access the internet connection for whatever reason, you will receive a full refund on the return. However, it is uncommon that the Verizon connection would not work with your computer!

Watch The DVD

A DVD and clear instructions will be provided to help you connect your computer to the Verizon wireless internet access. You will first need to disconnect any current internet connection your computer may have, such as a dial-up line or cable modem.

Small, plastic devices will be attached to your phone line and your computer next. You will also need to disconnect your old modem so that you can install the Verizon wireless internet access modem. Unplug it from the outlet and then from the back of your hard drive. Be careful with the tangle of wires that generally amasses behind people’s computers.

The Verizon package includes color-coded wires, so that it is easy to visualize which wires perform which functions. This will be made slightly more difficult if you are color blind, but not impossibly so. Different colored wires hook to the modem on your computer, your phone jack, and an electrical outlet.

Take your time when you are installing Verizon wireless internet access. Follow the directions carefully and read closely. Installing the connection should not be a difficult task, but if problems do occur, Verizon has a tech support staff standing by to assist you in getting connected.

Ever since their early “pin drop” experiment, used to demonstrate the clarity of their phone lines in the 1980’s, Sprint has been an innovator and leader among telecommunications providers. That was the time when Bell Systems, sometimes known as “Ma Bell,” held a monopoly on the phone network in the US. After this was declared illegal, the path was opened for the competition to step up.

The first phone company to take the challenge was MCI, quickly followed by Sprint. They did not stop with simple land line phone networks, and keep up with technological developments and advancements. Basic phone connections have been supplemented with a sprint wireless pc which is now one of the most popular wireless services in America.

Installing Your sprint wireless pc

The sprint wireless pc is installed by a trained Sprint employee, saving time and stress for the consumer. These polite professionals will get your connection up and running in no time. To access your sprint wireless pc, you will need a computer, a small digital transceiver that resembles a satellite dish, and a modem to hook up to your computer.

If possible, the digital transceiver would be best hooked up on the roof or an eave. It should be out of the way of trees or other buildings to receive the clearest signal from your sprint wireless pc.

Special Features Of Your sprint wireless pc

This internet connection provides access to one of the fastest kinds of internet technology, as well as other Sprint-specific features. You will get six individual email addresses, each with the capacity to begin a new webpage with Earth Link’s Click N Build software. Each page has up to 1 MB of web space available, or up to 10 MB total for your connection. sprint wireless pc also allows up to 20 hours of remote dial-up access for those times when you are away from home. There are various ways to pay your bill, including direct debit, credit card, and personal check.

Contacting support is easy when you use a sprint wireless pc. They are available by email, phone, or the sprint wireless pc Online Customer Service Support Center. There is also no need to change to a different Internet Service Provider (such as AOL), when you use Sprint.

If security is your main concern, sprint wireless pc addresses this as well. While wireless connections can be very insecure, Sprint takes the highest precautions. They provide tips and free information for their customers on how to protect themselves. Sprint also carefully monitors their network, in order to prevent hackers from accessing areas they should not be. However, these protections are not a substitute for installing and updating traditional security and virus software on your PC.

Since Sprint uses the transceiver device located on the roof of your home, these particular transmissions are only accessible to sprint wireless pc customers. Most other companies do not have this type of protection due to their software.
